Peru Sets 190,000-Ton Catch Limit for Gigas Squid in 2025

The Peruvian Ministry of Production has issued Ministerial Resolution No. 000123-2025-PRODUCE, setting the Total Allowable Catch Limit (TACL) for Dosidicus Gigas at 190,000 tons for the first half of 2025, valid until June 30. This decision aims to balance resource conservation and fisheries economic development .

  • Key Recovery Period for Fisheries: Due to the impact of El Niño (ENSO), Peru’s Gigas Squid catch dropped to 188,345 tons in 2024, the lowest in the past decade, compared to 621,852 tons in 2023.
  • Government-Driven Sustainable Management: Strengthening marine monitoring, optimizing fishing zones, and enhancing fishermen’s capabilities to ensure stable resource recovery.
  • 2025 as a Turning Point for Industry Revival: With global market demand remaining strong, the government plans to revitalize the Squid industry through scientific management and industrial optimization.

Peru’s Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos, stated that marine conditions are improving, and future catch volumes are expected to rise. 2025 will be a crucial year for the Gigas squid industry to regain its peak.
